2026 Global Media Festival: Screening of The Making of a Japanese (Japan, 2023) and Q&A with Director Ema Ryan Yamazaki

Saturday

March 7 - 9, 2026

5:30PM - 7:00PM

The screening is part of Georgia Tech’s annual Global Media Festival, a film and discussion series that brings international stories into dialogue with pressing social, cultural, and ethical questions. The 2026 theme, Sustaining Empathy in a Fractured World, frames empathy as an active capacity — one that must be cultivated and maintained through daily practices and shared responsibility.

The Making of a Japanese reflects this theme by focusing on the everyday routines and small moments that shape children’s understanding of cooperation, accountability, and mutual respect. Through classroom observations and quiet storytelling, the documentary highlights how empathy and collective responsibility are learned through lived experience.

The 2026 Global Media Festival includes 11 total events, featuring 10 international film screenings, each followed by conversations with directors, scholars, or invited guests. This year also introduces an introductory directing workshop, offering students a hands-on opportunity to explore how stories are shaped and presented on screen.

All screenings are free and open to the public. Each event concludes with national food offerings, creating space for continued informal conversation and community engagement.
